I really wasn’t expecting to laugh so much. Watching her is like staring into the embers of a fire: hypnotic, dream-inducing and very time-consuming. I’ve never been more in love. I realise now that I feared my life would end when the baby’s began, and being partnerless would render it impossible to escape the nursery. BB (before baby), I travelled extensively, made television documentaries and wrote my first book. I went skydiving, swam with dolphins, rode horses bareback, meditated in India, and fell in love with unsuitable men. I lived life to the full, but I can honestly say that nothing compared to watching my child come out of my body. AB (after baby), I think that raising a child alone isn’t necessarily harder than raising one with a partner. Each scenario has challenges and rewards.
I’m lucky to have a supportive family. My father and Lily adore each other. She rests on his tummy, grooming his moustache, and they smile lovingly at each other. To be closer to my family I moved from London to Dorset, my mother making my transition from girl-about-town to seaside mum almost painless.
