Radio in the 50’s

Radio did a lot to people’s life in the 50’s. Quickly it became the most important medium. However there are different reasons for the radio getting so successful. One reason is, that it was affordable for nearly the whole population. So radio could get the first mass medium. A second reason surely is, that radio programs were the first kind of entertainment. Until now people’s day had nearly only consisted of working and sleeping. Listening to the radio one evening was something, people could look forward to all the week. First time they had fun, information and entertainment.
So one evening the whole family sat together; listening to the wireless was a really event. Not rarely families also planned their whole day, the meals for example, in a way which enabled them to listen to the radio in every case.
Of course the invention of the wireless was also advantageous to the workers in broadcasting corporations. On the one hand radio created many jobs and on the other hand now it was possible, to speak to many members of the society at the same time. Even if this invention unfortunately led to propaganda being spread much more easy, I think radio is a good thing.
Not least, because people also could improve their knowledge through the radio. Nevertheless people didn’t listen to the radio only to learn something. There were also news, comedy shows, interesting stories, political analysis and much more.
So you see, that radio as a mass medium is comparable to television today.
