Imagine you are working for an insurance company. Julie Riffel, a student who has just arrived from England and is now studying at Hanover University, is not familiar with German accident insurance. She has sent you an E-Mail because she has got some questions about statutory and personal accident insurance. Answer her E-Mail. Do not forget a polite introduction and ending.

These are Julie`s questions:

  1. I heard that as a student I am covered by statutory accident insurance. Is that right?
What are the main responsibilities of statutory accident insurance?
2. How much do I have to pay for statutory accident insurance?
3. Does statutory accident insurance only cover students?
4. In my free time I like playing tennis, riding my mountain bike and in the winter holidays I like to go skiing in the Alps in Switzerland. Does statutory accident insurance cover accidents in all these activities?
5. Do I also have cover from statutory accident insurance when I visit my family back home in England for a few weeks?
6. How much cover do I need, if I take out personal accident insurance?
7. If I am disabled as a result of an accident, how can I find out, how much compensation I get from my insurance company?

Task 1

Julies Questions:

1.
As a student, you are insured against accidents by law. The prerequisite is that you are enrolled at a state-recognised university, college or university of applied sciences.

A rooftop falls off the ladder, a student injures herself while jumping, an IT specialist slips on her way to work and breaks her leg: All these events have one thing in common – they are a case for statutory accident insurance.

The purpose of statutory accident insurance is to restore the health and performance of insured persons after an accident at work or an occupational disease. If this is not possible, the statutory accident insurance pays a pension to the injured party or his or her survivors.

2.
Unlike employees or apprentices in companies, students or doctoral candidates fall within the remit of the accident insurance funds, which are maintained by the individual federal states. For example, the Lower Saxony accident fund is responsible for the students of the state of Lower Saxony. Membership in the accident insurance scheme is non-contributory for this group of persons, the premiums are paid out of the state budget.

Since 2013, the average contribution rate for statutory accident insurance has been well below 1. 3 percent. By means of occupational safety and health measures, you can determine the development of the contributions yourself.

3.
No, of course not. Anyone who has an employment, training or service relationship is insured by law; insurance cover exists regardless of age, sex, marital status or nationality. It covers accidents at work and commuting as well as occupational diseases

4.

In principle, the following applies: In the event of accidents at home or during leisure time (even during breaks from work), statutory accident insurance does not apply. In these situations only private accident insurance is available. More sensible, however, is the protection provided by an occupational disability insurance. This is because it pays, regardless of the cause, as soon as the insured person is no longer able to pursue his profession.

5.

The stay abroad must be conditioned by the university and must be associated with it. Private stays are not insured for this they would have to take out additional private accident insurance. It is a private trip that has nothing to do with your student activity and is therefore not secured.

6.

With private accident insurance for students, the contributions, almost more than with other insurances, depend on the amount of benefits chosen. First of all, there is the basic amount of invalidity. In the case of accident insurance, it is precisely the chosen minimum progression that is responsible for the costs.

As a rule, a progression of 225 percent, 350 percent or 500 percent is chosen. Additional benefits, such as hospital daily allowance for the consequences of an accident or an accident pension, may also be selected upon completion of the contract. If a daily hospital allowance of 50 euros is fixed, the private accident insurance pays 50 euros per day during an inpatient hospital stay.

In most cases, clients opt for a well-equipped death grant and a small daily hospital allowance in addition to a disability amount. However, the insured hospital daily allowance applies only in the event of an accident.

7.

There are different degrees of invalidity in the assessment of the actual invalidity. This is determined on the basis of the so-called division tax.

If doctors are appointed by the insurer, the insured person must also be examined by them.

The insurer shall bear the necessary costs, including any resulting loss of earnings.

in case of invalidity – up to 10 per thousand of the insured sum

for transitional benefit – up to 5 percent of the insured amount

for daily allowance – up to three daily allowance rates

for hospital daily allowance – up to five hospital daily allowance rates
