SAY GOODBYE TO NINE TO FIVE
If you’re one of the millions of people who still work a regular nine-to-five day, then get ready for a change.
A report published today says that in ten years from now you’ll be in a minority.

The workplace is changing. It’s happening for a number of reasons. More than three quarters of us now work in the service sector. Increasingly, our customers don’t want a nine-to-five service. They expect shops to stay open longer, customer service helplines to be there 24/7, and transport to be available when they need it. More women are working, and many working parents – men as well as women – have to juggle a job with time with their kids.

The main reason for change, though, is that we now just expect more from life. We’re better educated, travel more and are generally better off than generations before us, and we’re no longer ready to accept the idea that a job dominates our life. Let’s use one of today’s buzz words: we want a better work-life balance.

So what’s the answer? It’s called ‘flexible working’ and it’s something that businesses and the government are taking extremely seriously. It’s not a new idea, of course. There have been people like part-time workers for years. But in the future, it’s likely to become the norm rather than the exception in the workplace.

Flexible working can take many different forms, but the basic idea is that you sit down with your employer and together come up with a work pattern that suits you and the company. You have to be flexible in both directions, of course, and that can sometimes mean working a few extra hours when the company is especially busy. However, in return you get to organise your job so that you also have time for your personal life. Flexibility is obviously good for us, the workers, but what’s in it for the employers? British Telecom (BT), which has one of Europe’s biggest flexible working schemes and around 11,000 homeworkers, says it saves €104 million a year just on office costs. Other companies also find that staff turnover is much lower, absenteeism is around 20% below average, productivity is better, and because their workers are happier, customers benefit from better service. It’s a win-win situation for everyone.
