The movie "Wreck-it-Ralph" takes place in an arcade hall with many different game machines. After closing time the characters of the games have end of work. Ralph is the protagonist of the movie "Wreck-it-Ralph". Ralph is unhappy with his role as a bad guy in his Retro-game "Fix it Felix" because after end of work the other characters having fun in a big house and he goes to a dump which is his home. His job is to destroy the big house, while the hero "Felix" is fixing it.

Even though he makes a good job but only Felix gets always praise and golden medals. After a meeting of the self-help group "anonymous bad guys" he mets Tapper, a burnout soldier of the Ego-Shooter "Hero´s Duty", in a barkeeper game. Because he wants to be a hero too, Ralph travels secretly into the foreign game to win the medal, which is actual reserved for the successful player of "Hero´s Duty".
In a game break he climbed up the tower, where the medal is located.
After he gets the medal he destroys a egg of the "Cybogs", the enemy of this game, by mistake. Acidentelly he flies with an emergency capsule into the little sweet game "Sugar Rush" and lose his medal. Sugar Rush is a little go-cart race game. In this way he think that the bug is dead but later he will notice that the bugs are like a computer virus which accrete themselves noteless and very fast.
While Ralph is searching his medal, he meets Venellope, who uses the medal to get qualified for the go-cart race. Venellope is a Glitch, which means she is a programming error. Because of this she is a misfit too. Ralph and Venellope get together to win the medal back by winning the go-cart race.

At the same time Felix searches for Ralph, because if Ralph doesn´t come back in his game "Fix it Felix", the game will be switched off.
The female sergeant of the game "Hero´s Duty" tries to track the escaped robot insect before the oviposition. In the race Venellope competes against her rivals, whereat it transpire that the King of Sugar Rush "King Candy" might be the jealous "Turbo".
Usually Turbo is a main character of an old race game which lost on population. Because of this he jumped out  of his game, manipulates the new race games, to win the population back. But that did´t happened. His game was switched off. He went in the Sugar Rush race game, manipulated and changed the programming to be the new main character of this game. Venellope defeats him in the race.
But then the insect pest comes over the sweet world and it must be evacuated. So there is the showdown between Ralph and the, by now mutated, Turbo.
During the fight, Ralph destroys a hilltop where is a flowstone cave inside, which consists of Mentos and a hot cola sea beneath. The mentos drops into the hot cola sea and it becomes a big explosion with a high and bright bonfire. This bonfire is like a electric insect killer which gravitates all bugs inclusive Turbo. A reset of the game shows that Penelope is the real main character of the game. Additionally it becomes clear that the glitches of Venellope are special skills.
Ralph  goes back in his game and resign himself being the bad guy in his game.
Additionally he makes sure that all the homeless characters of throwout Retro-games get a home at "Fix it Felix" and become integrated in a bonus level.
