It is true that the hard punishment of govermental law is a warning for potential criminals but it is also fact that many murderers don`t calculate the consequences of their doings.
Many of them are influenced by drugs or on the search for money to pay for their drug addiction. These persons are mentally ill and should get psychological therapy. They may,

If the goverment executes a person they swap the position with the offender who has commited a murder. They aren`t any better than a murdererwhen using the execution of the murderer as an instrument of vengeance.
Furthermore there remains a high risk of executing an innocent person. Sentencing a person to death row is mostly a final decision which can`t be recalled after having set the lethal injection.

Of course I can understand the wish for revenge by the mother of a murdered child. We can`t use practices from the middle ages in our century.
I think that a life in prison is more effective and for most people even harder than legally killing them
It`s not the way of a democratic nation to retaliate with the same means.. It would mean to be on the same level with the offender.
We can not rape a rapist or hurt some one in the case of injury so why should we kill a murderer?
