It was all organized and we knew that Tuesday is our theatre day. Breakfast was at 8 am. Early? - not at all in comparison with other days. Bacon and Eggs or better some toast and cereals? Tea? After breakfast: city walk II. We had to hurry: a glance at Westminster Abbey, another at Big Ben -and in between Houses of Parliament. Now all the way over the bridge, passing London Eye and gazing quickly into the Tate Gallery of Modern Art. One picture here another one there- oh where is the group? Hurry up! -always following the red guides. Finally we arrived: 11 o’clock and having seen (or at least crossed) half of the capital of the British Empire. There are only living 7.5 million people! Anyways we arrived: the Globe Theatre. Our feet had been already on a strike so we were lucky when we were able to sit. They wouldn’t have carried us any further and just now we got aware of the place we were at: The Globe Theatre. SHAKESPEARE’s Globe! 500 years old! -well actually we are all older than the building but anyways: the historical spirit came over us- or it let it be… Our guide was fantastic. Her British English was wonderful and no she was not a ghost! First of all we got an introduction concerning the role of theatre in London and why the Globe is situated where it is. Some might also remember the bishop of St. Paul’s Cathedral visiting the quarter to satisfy his sinful needs: Sex, drugs and Rock and Roll! Whatever, back to topic: Afterwards we entered the Globe, sat down contemplating the stage and listened to the guide. She told us all about the particularities of the Shakespearean stage and pointed out that Shakespeare wrote for this stage and for entertainment. Main difference to today’s theatres: roofless, and staging during daylight (there was no electricity yet!) By the way, do you actually know when Shakespeare lived? Now we left the Globe going to an auditorium room. “To be or not to be, that is the question!” No, that is not Faust. It is HAMLET! Finally we were allowed to act! Well, nobody really wanted to but everybody enjoyed this entertainment and handling of Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet. Lunch time: Having crossed the Shakespeare quarter we got some time to eat but soon we continued our city walk and visit the other half of the British Empire. Tower of London, just to mention one of the sights we were able to take a picture of: Now: free time! -but don’t believe that we just went back relaxing in the hotel. Most of us went into the city to experience London’s cultural and historical spirit- or in other words: SHOPPING! And notice that this was not the day yet! The real theatre just started in the evening and I do not allude to the play “Norman’s Conquests” by Ayckbourn staged in the Old Vic. The play was secondary. It was about three couples and their love affairs. It was funny, but well British humor... The actually fuss took place around Jude Law: WHO THE HELL IS THAT?!? -Apparently a famous actor visiting the play incognito. Bummer! He was recognized and now for whatever reason more interesting than the play- cheeze please! After having stared at Jude Law for about two hours we finally went back to our “hotel” (if it is possible to name it like this…). nighttime: beddy-byes, turn of the light and into the coooosy bed. Next day. dankeschön =) |
