The extract from the story „The Snob“ by Morley Callaghan describes a situation in which the student John Harcourt meets his father unexpectedly in a book store.
John and his girlfriend Grace are in the department store, when John spots his father reading a book. At first he was not sure weather it is really his father, but he made him out by his neck and his hat. John carefully glances at his father and recognizes that he looks like an unkempt working man.
The presence of his father let John feel queasy and after buying a book he urged Grace to leave the store immediately. But Grace does not understand his impatientness and wants to stay in the book store to watch for other books. John decided to remain with his girlfreind and get closer and closer to his father. While looking at him John gets remained of the old times, when he came every night to his parent’s bedroom to talk with them about his day at the university.
John is ahshamed of his father and decides not to introduce him to his girlfriend. He thinks of Grace’s wealthy family and of his plain parents and does not want that they get to know each other, beacause he wants to be admitted by Grace’s people.
