Background

The idea for “The lion king” arose 1989, when originated first plans at Disney, to produce a film of lions which is played in Africa. The title of work is named “King of the Jungle”, before one found out, that lions are not home in jungle.

An abundance of pictures and drawing served as draft for arrangement of background pictures. At the arrangement of animal principal actors was attached great importance to realistic graph. Although “The lion king” tells a very humane story, is he the only Disneyfilm, in which happen no traces humanly existence. During the production has been using computer animation. Regarding this well-known scene is the panic-stricken flight of a Gnu herd across a gorge. During the song “Be Prepared” is one passage where Scar sits on a cliff overlooking his hyenas. This scene is inspired by Leni Riefenstahls propaganda film „Triumph of the Will” and shows Scar correspondingly like a dictator.

The film shows some parallels to well-known Disney-films like the “Jungle book”.

Music

For the production of the film music decided the producer on Hans Zimmer because he has with “Two worlds” and “Tears of the sun” already experiences with in Africa playing films and traditional African music. The musical under painting represents an unusual combination of classic and traditional African sound.

To songs was engaged Elton John, who composed the melodies. Tim Rice wrote the words. A short time before he had worked by Aladdin for Disney. Elton John personally didn’t arose as singer, but only in separate versions of “Circle of Life” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”, from which the twice song is played in the end. For the music the film got two Oscars.

1995 be published the music album „Rhythm of the Pride Lands” with songs in african styles, which either arose the production of the film or inspired from than. Some songs were used in the successors or in the musical.

The film has its première on the 15th of June 1994 first in two big cinemas is the USA. On the 24th of June 1994 was followed the officially publication in all countries of the USA. On the first weekend the film brought in 40.888.194 $, and was in time to come so successful, that he after a short break on the 18th of November 1994 came in cinemas again.

World-wide he was the successfully film of the year and till today to the successfully classical comic.

Musical

“The Lion King” is a Broadway stage musical with the same title, directed by Julie Taymor, and featured actors in animal costumes as well as giant, hollow puppets. After the stage show first opened on July 31, 1997 in Minneapolis at the Orpheum Theatre, it became an instant success. The show went on to be nominated for 11 Tony Awards, winning 6 including Best Musical and Best Director. An attraction in Disney`s Animal Kingdom and Hong Kong Disneyland is the Festival of the Lion King. Is essentially a shortened version of the musical.

After the success of the Broadway show, the show was produced in the United Kingdom, and continues to play at the Lyceum Theatre in London. Taymor led the English production of the show, and Peter Schneider was the producer. A Canadian production of the show was staged in Toronto and ran for four years at the Princess of Wales Theatre.

The show played at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney, Australia, from 19 October 2003, until 26 June 2005. The production then ran at the Regent Theatre in Melbourne from 28 July 2005 until 4 June 2006. There are currently two U.S. touring productions. The tour version is very similar to the original Broadway production. However, certain scenic elements which rise out of the stage floor were converted to less epensive configurations for the touring productions.

Musical adaption

The musical assimilates several changes and additions to the storyline as compared to the film. The mandrill Rafiki`s gender was changed to a female role, as Taymor believed there was commonly no leading female character in the film. Many of the animals portrayed in the production are actors in costume using extra aids to move their costumes. For example, the giraffes are dipcted by actors carefully walking on stilts. For principal characters such as Mufasa and Scar, the costumes feature mechanical headpieces that can be raised and lowered to aid the illusion of a cat "lunging" at another. Other characters, such as the hyenas, Zazu, Timon and Pumbaa are portrayed by actors in life-sized puppets or costumes. The Timon character is described by Taymor as one of the hardest roles to master, because the movement of the puppet`s head and arms puts a burden on the actor`s arms, back and neck.

Composer Lebo M led the original Broadway chorus. The chorus members are usually noticeable in the production, rather than being hidden in the shadows as with some other musical shows.

A new element of the production, the Lioness Hunt, features a particularly complicated dance sequence for the actresses, and the dance is made even more difficult by the large headpieces worn during the scene.

The Lion King was nominated for a lot of Tony Awards in 1998 e.g. for the best musical, Scenic Design of a musical, Costume Design of a musical and best Lighting Design of a Musical.
