Globilization: Englisch Cartoon Analysis - Boxing Ring

This is a cartoon by Ebert, published by Cartoon Movement and it deals with the power of globalization and its unfairness. What is noticeable at the first glance is that the artist presents a serious topic in a humorous and ironic way.


The scene depicts two boxes in a common situation before the actual fight in the boxing ring. On the left, there is standing a tall and muscular boxer who is looking very intimidating. Underneath the tall boxer is a caption which reads "globalization". There is a further boxer on the right, who appears less muscular and intimidated which is underlined by his cold sweat. Another significant aspect is that there is standing a referee in the centre of the picture between the boxes who is demanding a fair match while he is facing the weak boxer and wiggling his finger. You can also notice the caption underneath the boxer on the right which says "localism". In the background of the picture and many visitors outside the boxing ring. Especially striking are the bright colours that the art is used.

The artist creates a negative atmosphere towards globalisation by his choice of a visual elements and the use of rhetorical devices. This will be shown in detail in the following paragraphs. Additionally, he attempts win us over to his side by using an ironic element. As an example, the referee appeals to the boxer who represents localism while wiggling his finger, even though he knows that he has no chance. This reveals that the artists intention is clear. As a result of this, I think that the crucial message is that globalization is too powerful. Thus, I think that the artist appears to to the viewers conscientious that we must take action and do something against this horrendous unbalanced distribution of power.
