Boyle

T.C. Boyle (Thomas Coraghessan Boyle) was born on December 2, 1948, he is a U.S. novelist and short story writer. Since 1975 he has published twelve novels and more than 100 short stories. He grew up in Peekskill, New York. He studied at the State University of New Work and nowadays he is Professor in English at the University of Southern California.
In 1974 he married Karen Kvashay and they live together with their children(a daughter (Kerrie) and two sons (Milo and Spencer))in Montecito.
Thanks to Boyle the typical historic novel got a new look, which is better than before. So his novels and short storys are often based on solid researched historical events and characters, which are included in his fictive written story. His fiction also explores the recklessness and the unpredictability of nature and the toll3 human society takes on the environment.

Some of his novels are:
World`s End (1987),
The Road to Wellville (1993)
The Tortilla Curtain(1995)

Boyle has published eight collections of short stories. Some examples are:
Descent of Man (1979),
Greasy Lake (1985),
If the River was Whiskey (1989)

His short storys regulary appear in the major American magazines, including The New Yorker, Harper`s and so on.

2."A FRIEND OF THE EARTH" by T.C. Boyle

"To be a friend of the earth, you have to be an enemy of the people."
The eco-novel `A Friend of The EarthŽ was written by Thomas C. Boyle in 2001 and was published by Penguin Books. The theme of the novel is global warming, other environmental catastrophes and their consequences.
In my opinion ŽA friend of the earth` is a very emotional and interesting story. The first person narrator is Tyrone (Ty) Tierwater, who is also the protagonist of the book.
There are two time frames in the novel between which the author jumps back and forth. The first time frame is set in 1980 when Ty was an eco-terrorist from `Earth Forever!Ž and was married to Andrea, the love of his life. They lived together with his daughter (out of Ty’s first marriage) Sierra. The second time frame takes place 45 years later. Ty’s worst fears have become true: the greenhouse effect is worse then ever, the biosphere has collapsed, the weather is really weird and nearly all animals are extinct. In 2025 Ty, now being 75, works for a rich Pop Star in his private menagerie in California where he looks after lions, hyenas and other animals which nobody wanted to save. Suddenly Andrea comes back into his life after over 20 years. She has come back ‘for love’ as she says and because a friend of her wants to write a biography about Sierra, who died, being only 25, as a martyr by falling out of a tree, after having livid on it for years.
In the end after some more minor catastrophes there is a bit of hope and so the novel ends well.
The protagonist Ty matures during the story and is a very solid but not perfect character.
The style of the language and the tone change very often in the course of the novel because Boyle uses the vocabulary, the expressions and the tone to make a scene as real and humanistic as possible. So the entire novel is not too difficult to read and to understand.
The message of `A Friend of the earthŽ is, in my opinion, a very simple one: Respect!
If you respect nature and the animals as well as your fellow human beings, everything will be alright.
All in all I certainly can recommend this novel to everyone who is interested in environmental problems. It is entertaining and touching at the same time and contains something of a love story as well.
