Of Mice And Men

Summary Chapter One
Two men are wlaking along a hot, dusty road and stop by a stream for a drink of water. Lennie, the larger of the men, drinks deeply from the stream, although George warns him to be careful because the water might not be safe. After George drinks a small amount, they sit down to rest. Lennie wonders where they are going and George is disgusted that Lennie has already forgotten. He explains again that they are gong to work on a farm not too far away and that Lennie is not to say anything when they reach the farmhouse.
George notices that Lennie is hiding something in his pocket, and he forces the bigger man to hand it over. It is a dead mouse that Lennie found alongside the road and has been petting. George takes the mouse and hurls it away. He reminds Lennie that petting things has always gotten them in trouble, especially in the last town; Lennie, however, has already forgotten the episode. George sends Lennie after some sticks in order to make a fire and promisesto let him have a match to light the fire. When Lennie comes back wet and with only one stick, George knows that Lennie has retrieved the dead mouse. He takes it away again, trying to explain that this mouse is not fresh and is not good for petting.
Affter Lennie collects enough wood, George takes out three cans of beans to warm up for their supper. Lennie wishes that he had some ketchup to go on his, and George reminds him that they don’t have any. George suddenly explodes with anger, explaining all the things he could do if he weren’t tied down with Lennie. After George complains some more, Lennie volunteers to go away and live in a cave somewhere by himself. Then George feels sorry for being so mean and, at Lennie’s request, he begins to tell about their plans t buy a little farm all their iwn where Lennie can raise rabbits and just the two of them will live there “off the fatta the lan’”.
George decides to spend the night here by the stream and show up the next day for wor. Before going to sleep, he tells Lennie to remember this place because if Lennie ever gets into trouble he must return here and hide in the bushes. Lennie promises to try to remember, but his mind is thinking more about the rabbits that they are going to have someday.
