The "Lightning-Rod Man" tells how a lonely man lives along the Acroceraunian hills while a fine thunderstorm hits. All of a sudden he hears a knock at the door. Naturally the man let the stranger into his house to let his wet clothes from the storm, dry. "The stranger stood still in the exact middle of the cottage where he had first planted himself." He had a lean , gloomy like figure with his hair dark and lank. The stranger said nothing, as he stood in a puddle on the bare oak floor with a strange walking stick in his hand. The man then asked the stranger to be seated but the stranger just looked at him half in wonder. Soon after, the stranger spoke and said " I solemnly warn you, that you had best accept mine, and stand with me in the middle of the room." As the man listened to him, he replied. He said "I stand very well here." As the man did not know, the most dangerous part of a house during a storm is the fireplace, which the man was standing directly beside. A few moments later, the man asked the stranger why he had stopped. The stranger said that he was a dealer of lightning-rods and would like to sell one to the man. He also commented by saying his lightning-rods were the best, even better that the Canadians, who also sold lightning-rods. "Mine is the only true rod. Look at it. Only one dollar a foot." The man thought it was a little strange, but he still couldn"t figure out why the man traveled during thunderstorms. The stranger said that was his way of selling, but he always used certain precautions along the way. He then asked the man again to step away from the walls as he explained that sometimes the current from the storm could run down the wall. The man asked him where the safest room in the entire house would be, and the stranger said "right where I am standing." The house happened to be a one story house with an attic and a cellar. The room where he was standing was right in between the two. His reason for this was because lightning sometimes passes from the clouds to the Earth, and also sometimes from the Earth to the clouds. He choose the middle room because if the lightning should strike the house at all, it could come down the chimney or the walls, so the further away the better. Again, the stranger asked the man to buy a lightning-rod from him for twenty dollars. The man replied " I stand at ease in the hands of my God. False negotiator, away!" With that, the stranger enlarged his round eyes and sprang upon the man, with his tri-forked thing at his heart. He snatched it away and flung the copper scepter after him. "But spite of my treatment, and spite of my dissuasive talk of him to my neighbors, the lightning-rod man still dwells in the land; still travels in storm-time, and drives a brave trade with the fears of man." The End hoffe ma des is des wenn ja sag bescheid |
