Nick Hornby – High Fidelity- Essay

Laura is portrayed as a comfortable woman who wants her distance to Rob. Laura works in an office and spent most of her time there. So the communication of both has changed from the past to present. For Laura it´s a bad feeling to know that the relationship both has changed and also to know that the communication is defect. So she tried to get affection by Ian, who is also called Ray. But it doesn´t mean that she hates Rob.
While she lived at Ian´s house, which she described as childish place and a place it made her glad (p.158) she came to visit Rob without only the reason to pick up her things. She likes Rob very much, so she has often forgave him when he made failures. The best example is when she was pregnant and Rob slept with another one. (p.72). It is only one example of many worst things he has done to Laura.
When Laura is talking about sex it is not the same as Rob style to talk. Rob often uses slang words in contrast to Laura talk style. She talks with more attention and tries to behave like an adult person what makes her more decent than Rob.
I give you an example where they have a little conversation about sex on Page.87.
Rob´s question is “Is it better?” This shows that he is very curious and wants to know if the sex life is better for Laura when she has it with Ian or him. He only wants to get the point that he is the real man in bed. When Laura says:” …we haven´t done it jet” he feels good and says in his thoughts: “YES”, which shows the reader that he was really deal with this question. In reality he shows Laura that he is very cool and says just: “Never?”
So we can make a note that he does not show his true feelings to Laura. Always when he talks to her he seems very cool with an adjustment like “ I am the man ” and that’s while it is very challenging for him to express his inside feelings.
So it can be said that Laura is a good partner for a man who behave his life as an arsehole like Rob does.
I also want to show you an uncommon situation for Laura, when she behaves diverse after the death of her dad. Rob went to the funeral because of the pleased by Laura when she called Rob and said:”Mum wants you to come to the funeral.”(p.176). But the most unbelievable situation which made me laugh, happened after the funeral when Laura and Rob drove with the car. Suddenly she asked for sex:” Listen Rob would you sleep with me?”(p.192). At that time she is not in a relationship with Ian.
Usually it is not a character for her but at this moment she behaves diverse. I think it is a sign of her loneliness.
My next point is to show you the relationship between Rob and his parents.
The mum of Rob likes Laura very much and thinks that she is the perfect woman for Rob. It clearly shows in an example while the phone call between Rob and his mum when says: “You´re lucky Laura doing so well”(p.38).
The mum of Rob is worried about him because she knows that he never has a true relationship to a woman. The mother hopes that he marries Laura. But after knowing that Laura left him she is sad and disappointed.
The relationship of Rob to his dad is interesting. He is very open to his dad and does not be shy to talk about sex with him. One day he really did it. For example he asked: “What did good in bed mean in 1955, if it meant anything at all” or “When was oral sex imported to Britain (p.94)?” It shows that Rob do not really care about what his dad could be think and it shows that Rob has an easy relationship to him.
I am going to work out the question “What could Rob teach the female readers about men?” Furthermore I want to say my opinion to the book.
I think Rob could teach the female readers a view in a typical man life. He has acknowledged the bias of men when he has written about his craving for girls. The most important thing he could teach the female readers is that a lot of men are “arseholes” and only want to have their fun with them. I am very sad about that point, because most of the female readers think before they have read the novel High Fidelity that men are arseholes and after reading the same! That’s unbelievable. I think nowadays it is very important to evolve the human being and not only to develop the bias of a man like in this book, which is written very funny and contemporary. Besides this we can note that most of the issues which were explained by High Fidelity is true.
