Hermann, only 1.5 hours drive away from St. Louis, was founded by German colonists in 1837. The immigrants dreamt with her arrival of a New World in which they could live her culture and her traditions and maintain, and which should be "German in every particular". Nevertheless, very soon turned out that the country was suited neither for agriculture nor cattle breeding. From the need one made a virtue: the surrounding mountain slopes with her rocky grounds turned out ideal for the cultivation of vines. Very soon the foundation-stone was laid for an extremely successful branch of industry: Already in the 1880s the wineries in Missouri produced 76,000 hectolitres of wine per year and lay with it, secondly, behind New York.

The wine industry found out with the prohibition in 1919 a harsh setback - there anti-German resentments joined on account of the First World War: Hermann struck the "Great of depression" already decades before the real national economic decline. At the end of the prohibition in 1934 the reconstruction of the wine economy began slowly, however, steadily. Hermann remained from the architectural modernisation trends of the post-war period and untouched in his historical core: the tourism started to discover the small town same to picture book, beside the wine cultivation another economic pivot leg of the region.
Today five best known vineyards of the state are found in Hermann; all together there is in the Weinanbaugebiet of Missouri more than 40 wineries whose products find national as well as international recognition.
