EL PASO — Ernestina Miranda left Mexico for the United States in 1979 in the trunk of a car. She found a job uving blue jeans in one of the Bozens of clothing factories here. Until recently, she made $7.50 an hour at the blue jeans factory. She has now got a temporary job in a plastics plant that used to be based in Michigan. She`s earning the minimum wage, no benefits, no security. Her husband, Miguel, is unemployed. The mortgageon their home is in danger.
10 `I worry about the future,` she says, echoing the Sentiment of blue-collar and, increasingly, white-collar workers from Los Angeles to Detroit who find theirjobs being moved to countries where wages are a small fraction of theirs.
When VF Jeanswear, the makers of Wrangler and Lee jeans, announced in September that it was moving the last of its jeans production and more than 1,000 jobs to Mexico, it was the
15 death of that industry in a town once known as Blue Jean Capital, USA. Levi Strauss, Sun Apparel, Wrangler, Lee and Farah do not make jeans here anymore.
Most people who have lost theirjobs in the garment industry are first-generation Mexican women. They are usually illiterate and can speak little English. They came to EI Paso in the 60s, 70s and 80s when the American factories moved down from the Northern States in search
20 of cheaper labour. With those factories having moved out of El Paso, these American citizens
find they are no longer needed.

Ernestina Miranda went to the United States in the 1979. There she found a job in one of clothing factories for six days a week and 12 hours a day. Later she bought a trailer and she married. The production transfered to Mexiko and so Ernestina Mirandas American dream has turned into a nightmare...
