The Black Canyon is a deep gorge through which the Gunnison River flows.
He is so narrow that just a little part of the sunlight reaches the ground, thats the rason why the walls seem to be black

The main attraction of the park is the road that goes along the south rim of the canyon. Furthermore, there is a campground and many hiking trails, paved and unpaved. There is a dirt trail from the canyon rim down to the river, the descent takes about 4, the rise of
approximately 6 hours.

The Black Canyon has been a barrier forever to people depicted. A settlement in the gorge never was abel. The first Europeans who explored the West Colorados, were Spaniards. The expedition of
Juan Rivera, 1765 and the famous expedition of Franciscan Father Domínguez and Escalante in 1776 led her to the region of the Black Canyon, but they all looked at it as impassable.
In 1882 examined the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad a way for their track to the west. The Representatives General Palmer instructed the surveyor Byron Bryant, the possibility of a route through the Black Canyon to the delta districts.
On 12 Bryant began in December 1882 with a small group of surveying with the difficult work.
After 68 days, they reached the end of the canyon.

In 1900 John started Pelton from Montrose, William Torrence of
Montrose Electric Light and Power Company and a small group of volunteers from
Cimarron in boats made of wood and canvas on an expedition. The planned 5-day trip turned into a one-month odyssey.
At an impassable bottleneck, "The Narrows"
referred to the canyon 12 m wide and 518 m deep, they gave up and left the Black Canyon at the nearest side canyon. They called the place of their failure "Falls of Sorrow".
A year later the Hydraulic Engineering Fellows, who worked for the government, made Torrence with a second attempt. It started on 12 of August of Cimarron.
They came more progress, because the
river is now less water in summer resulted.
They had it in 9 days to go 33 miles and the river 76 times over.
1916 Ellsworth Kolb did the experiment, the Black Canyon to the river as well. He had to stop his expedition. three times because he himself and other members of his crew suffered
injuries, they more than once in their boats and most of their
equipment got lost in the rapids or the weather a further journey impossible. He was not, and
he finally succeeded, albeit with interruptions, the entire Black Canyon
Cimarron to Delta to navigate.

Through the publications of Fellows and Kolb
on their expeditions began in the residents of Montrose, at the end in the`20s
for the Black Canyon to be interested. They realized what a gem they had in
front of their door and made for the recognition of the Black Canyon National Monument as strong. The Lions Club of Montrose built a road to the south rim of the canyon, on Labor Day 1930. On 2 March 1933 President Herbert Hoover declared the Black Canyon to the Gunnison National Monument. The Black Canyon
has grown over the years and always known on 21 October 1999 President Bill Clinton aplayed it to park.

The Black Canyon is a deep gorge through which the Gunnison River flows.
It is so narrow that just a little part of the sunlight reaches the ground, and that’s the reason why the walls seem to be black. The main attraction of the park is the road that goes along the south rim of the canyon. Furthermore, there is a campground and many hiking trails, paved and unpaved. There is a dirt trail from the canyon rim down to the river; the descent takes about 4 hours, the rise
approximately 6.

The Black Canyon has always represented a natural barrier to people. A settlement in the gorge has never been possible. The first Europeans to explore the West side of Colorado, were the Spaniards. The expedition of Juan Rivera in 1765, and the famous expedition of Franciscan Father Domínguez and Escalante in 1776 led them to the region of the Black Canyon, but they all looked at it as impassable.

In 1882, the possibility to build the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad was examined. It would represent a good path to the west. The Representatives General Palmer instructed the surveyor Byron Bryant, the possibility of a route through the Black Canyon to the delta districts.
In December 1882, Bryant began the difficult work, with a small group of people.
After 68 days, they reached the end of the canyon.(am meinsten verstehe ich nicht was du da meinst…es hat nicht viel sinn…ich habe geschrieben, was ich glaube dass du meinst)

In 1900 John, Pelton from Montrose, William Torrence of Montrose Electric Light and Power Company and a small group of volunteers from Cimarron, started another expedition in boats made of wood and canvas. The had a planned 5-day trip, but it turned into a one-month odyssey.
At an impassable part of the road, they gave up and returned. They called the place of their failure "Falls of Sorrow".

A year later the Hydraulic Engineering Fellows, who worked for the government, attempted to complete the odyssey. It started on 12 of August, on Cimarron. Their effort was worth it, because they reached their goal. Since they did it on summer, the river was much more calmed, and easier to travel on. They made it in 9 days.

In 1916 Ellsworth Kolb intended to repeat the achievement. He had to stop his expedition three times because, he and other members of his crew suffered several injuries, and more than once, they lost their equipment in the rapids. But he proved to be a fierce man, and he finally succeeded to navigate the whole canyon.

Because of the publications of Fellows and Kolb about their expeditions, the residents of Montrose started to get interested. They realized what a natural beauty they had in front of their noses, and postulated the Black Canyon to be National Monument. The Lions Club of Montrose built a road to the south rim of the canyon, on Labor Day 1930. On 2 March 1933 President Herbert Hoover declared the Black Canyon a National Monument. The Black Canyon has grown over the years, and it’s fame will probably continue to grow.
