Introduction/Facts

San Francisco is a metropolitan area in the US state of California on the west coast of the United States. With a population of 873,965, it is the fourth largest city in California. The name of the city is of Spanish origin. San Francisco is named after Saint Francis. Like many major US cities, San Francisco has a strictly rectangular road network. This leads to sometimes very steep streets, especially in the north-eastern (older) parts of the city. Andrew Smith Hallidie developed the cable cars in 1870, so you can come better from A to B. San Francisco has a great harbor protected from the ocean. In the Bay of San Francisco lay some island and the well-known Prison island of Alcatraz, which is today only a museum.

Geographical location

The city is located on the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula. The urban area is congruent with the county of the same name. The city is bounded by the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Golden Gate to the north, the Bay to the east and in the south the Hills of San Bruno

Asian boroughs

As in many American cities, there is a separate Japan town and Chinatown. The Chinatown of San Francisco forms together the Chinatown and the Japan town.

Climate
The Mediterranean climate is strongly influenced by San Francisco's location on the Pacific Ocean coast, especially by the cold California current coming from the north. The summers are therefore cooler and almost rain-free. The warmest months are October and September. The winters are mild and rainy, but frost is very rare. The daytime temperatures in summer are 15 to 25 degrees Celsius. But the fog that floats from the sea over San Francisco in the morning is also well known.
History

San Francisco Bay was originally settled by the Mewok Indian tribe. The Spanish conquerors sent two expeditions to explore the west coast in the 16th century. Hernán Cortes had discovered a "peninsula between the Gulf and the Ocean". But the official discovery came with Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo ten years later. He named it California. The bay was not discovered until 1775 because the fog often obscured the view of the strait.

Then the first Europeans settled around 1776. Spanish soldiers and a few missionaries founded a church by a lagoon they named Nuestra Señora de los Dolores.
The city was later called "San Francisco de Asis" by the missionaries, which became Saint Francis in English. In 1792, a British explorer named George Vancouver established a small settlement that later became downtown San Francisco. San Francisco had its first major boom with the gold rush that began in California in 1848. The name Golden Gate comes from this. The population rose from 900 to over 20,000 in one year. During this time, the city also developed into the economic center of California. Banks and many large companies were founded in San Francisco, for example Levi Strauss & Co. In order to create space in the expanding city, William Mathewson Eddy dealt with land surveying. In December 1849 he published the only surviving city map from earlier times.

Business

San Francisco is one of the richest cities in the USA. A major employer in the region is the US Navy, which has a few bases here as the city/region is close to the sea. San Francisco is one of the most important financial centers in the world. Tourism plays an important role in San Francisco's economy. In 2022, 3.9 tourists brought in $5.9 billion in revenue.

Natural disasters

The city's proximity to the San Andreas Fault means there is an increased risk of earthquakes. On April 18, 1906 was the worst earthquake. It stretched from San Juan Bautista to Eureka and had a magnitude of 7.8. About 3,000 people were killed and three quarters of San Francisco destroyed or damaged as a result of fires and blasts. The Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989 was the last major earthquake in the region.
