The opening speech "The Commonwealth`s new role" delivered by Tony Blair in Edinburgh in 1997 is about his vision to create a new Britain and also a new Commonwealth.

Both must be modernized and must have no racial disparity.
He says that Britain and the Commonwealth must be a meritocracy, where nobody is judged by is religion, race or culture. Everybody should be criticized by his personal achievements.
Moreover Britain shouldn`t be longer a state of the elite, there should be a first-class education for everybody. This is also the new Government`s number one priority.
Furthermore Britain should turn into a "central player in Europe"(ll.28-29), with this unique position, they have got the chance, to use their strength of their history to build their future. The Commonwealth is one of these strength.
In the next paragraph he talks about the Commonwealth, which covers a quarter of the world. Britain and the Commonwealth have got a lot of similarities, for example the history, the values, the culture and the language.
Not merely the Commonwealth isn`t a community of material wealth, but rather it is a community of inmaterial wealth, which is shared by every state of it. At the end he enumerates the positiv things of these "global community of nations" (l.63).
All in all it is an example of tolerance, understanding and equality and it can provide a strong moral compass for all other states.
Their goal is to connect the developed and developing world, they must act like bridge-builders, because both parts of the world need each other.

In the next paragraph he talks about the Commonwealth, which covers a quarter of the world. Britain and the Commonwealth have got a lot of similarities: the history, values, culture and language.
The Commonwealth isn`t merely a community of material wealth, but rather, it is a community of immaterial wealth, which is shared by every member state. At the end he enumerates the positive things of this "global community of nations" (l.63).
All in all it is an example of tolerance, understanding and equality and it can provide a strong moral compass for all other states.
Their goal is to connect the developed and developing world. To achieve this they must act like bridge-builders, because both parts of the world need each other.

I hope this helps,
