A NORMAL DAY AT AN AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOL

DESCRIPTION OF AMERICAN HIGH-SCHOOL

High schools are well known as typical American schools , but countries like Canada, the Philippines, New Zealand, South Africa have high schools too .

High schools can be considered as secondary schools , wich means that there are classes from 9 th to 12 th grade.

H igh schools are similar to our German "Gesamtschulen", integrated schools . This means that the performance or academic level of students does not play such an important part in high schools as in the German school system . Almost everyone in the US aged 13 to 18 attends a high school .

In the USA, after six years of elementary school , students change to middle school , which is also known as junior high school . After that , they attend at the actual high school wich is called senior high school or senior high.

In senior high school , the classes are not only marked with numbers , but the students of the individual classes also have special names , for example t he 9th grade is called " freshmen ". The 10th grade is called " sophomore ", the students from the 11th grade are " juniors " and the 12th grade is called " seniors ".

The schools are strict the students have to carry a hall pass during the lessons if they have to go to toilet . Leaving the school grounds during the lessons is strictly controlled . In American schools they have a dress code . The students dress must be neat and clean at all times . They are not allowed to wear too small , too tight , see- trough , or torn clothing . Students who break these rules are send home to change their dress .

The construction of schools is diffrent from school district to school district . In some states the students have to go to high school until they are 18. In other states they are allowed to leav e school at the age of 16 or 17, if the parents agree . The traditional construction for high schools is from 9 th to 12 th grade but t he demarcation of middle school and highschool is out of focus.

A high school graduation either ends with the middle maturity (Mittlere Reife ), the advanced technical college certificate (Fachhochschulreife) or the A Level (Abitur). It depends on the required classes you have to take to get your current graduation .

Its usual for the students to use a school bus that is only for students .
The use of the school bus is free. The School buses are yellow because of the good visibility on mornings so they can avoid an accident . In high schools, hours are usually from 7.30am to 2pm or 2.30pm. This is divided into six one-hour classes or four 90-minute classes (with a five-minute break between classes) and a 30-minute lunch break. Extra curricular activities and sports are scheduled after school hours. It`s common for pupils to take a packed lunch to school, although many pupils go home for lunch when they live close to school. High school students are provided with a locker where they can store their books and other possessions.

American s chools are more into extracurricular activities , they are as important as lessons . For example they have american football , soccer , basketball , baseball , swimming , volleyball , athletics and cheerleading they also have clubs like theater club and debatin club .

In Germany we have grades from 1 to 6 in the USA they have letters from A to F. For example A is excellent and F is Failure . In Germany the school day isn`t usually in the afternoon but in the USA there is school until 3 pm every day .
There vacation is 3 months in summer while ours are just six weeks . They have still christmas holidays and spring break.

Ich bin selbst nur Schülerin, würde aber "In Germany we have.." mit "In Germany there are" ersetzen.
