Good afternoon, Mr. Rodger,

I discovered your article by hazard and it seems to me that nearly everything you said about the commonalities and divergences of British and German food was (to a greater or lesser extent) true. However, there are some point where I can not agree to you and in my short comment i would like to explain these details and go into larger detail and basically supplement some things.

It is utterly true that some of Britains‘ most famous flavours aren‘t as local as one may think.British cuisine has always been pot pourri of eclectic styles. In ancient times they were influenced by the Romans and in medieval times the French.By the invasion of the Normans, they also brought with them the spices of the east: cinnamon, saffron, mace, nutmeg, pepper, ginger. During Victorian times good old British stodge mixed with exotic spices from all over the Empire.

As you mentioned in your text - Tea (as a classic example). They obviously adopted tea from China but something important you forgot to say ist that the British Empire was instrumental in spreading tea from China to India (-1660), which is in my opinion a very important aspect of this. Like you said in your article, they also invented ketchup as a brine of pickled fish.

Sole, haddock, hake, plaice, cod- Another important aspect- Fish and Chips exactly! This classic take away of choice has a very controversial but also interesting history background. I did a lot of research and have found out that the story of the humble chip goes back to the 13th Century to either Belgium or France! The chip was invented as a substitute for fish, rather than an accompaniment because the rivers froze over and resourceful housewives began cutting them into fishy shapes. And around the same time, fried fish was introduced into Britain by Jewish refugees! So its a rather uncertain topic.

I have nothing against your statements about Cadbury; heese etc. Goodbye :O
