"It has totally changed my life!"

Ainsley Binnett, 14, didn`t think twice about helping a stranger in trouble.

That Friday evening started pretty much as any other.
I was on my way to see a band with my friends, Jennie and Kinsley. It was the first time I`d been allowed to go and see them play and I was really excited. It was only a short walk from my home in Sussex to the concert, but when we were halfway there, I noticed a woman limping down the street towards us. She was about 40 with long hair and was wearing black leggings and a blue blouse. But the most noticeable thing was the fact that her face was full of pain.

"Excuse me, I`ve hurt my foot," she said. "Could you help me back to my flat?" She looked upset and I felt as if I should do something to help her, so I put my arm around her and the three of us slowly helped her towards the nearby flats. The woman told us her name was Maxine and that she lived on the first floor with her 11-year-old son. When we got to her front door, she asked us in for a cup of tea, but as we were already very late, we refused politly. "Wait a second. I want to give you something to thank you for your help," Maxine said, before she disappeared inside. Moments later, she came out of the flat with something in her hand. It took me several seconds to realize what it was. I couldn`t belief my eyes. She had a gun and was waving it about wildly in my direction!

I froze with fear. Before I could even think of what to do next, Maxine grapped my arm and started pushing me into her flat. I could see the terror on my friends` faces, but even though I was so afraid, I was able to should, "Run! Get help!" By now I was shacking and crying hysterically. Maxine pointed the gun at me and turned of all the lights and closed the curtains, so that the only light in the room was that of the TV. "Why are you doing this to me?" I cried. "I haven`t done anything wrong!" "Neither has my son," she said. "But he`s still been taken away from me."

She made me sit on the sofa and came and sat beside me. Together, we stared at some silly quiz show. My eyes kept wandering to the clock on the wall and I felt rising fear with every minute that was over. Surely someone would come to help. Then I noticed a photo of a boy on the wall. Nervously I asked Maxine if he was her son. She nodded. "The police took him away because they said I wasn`t a good mother," she said.
