`Doug` is an extract from the novel `Belly Flop` by Morris Gleitzmann which is set in a small Australian village.
The story is about a boy called Mitch Webber who believes in guardian angels because his grandmother used to tell him about them. It`s been a long time since Mitch last gave his angel Doug a call, but now he needs help again. Everyone in town hates him and his family. It hasn`t been raining for eight years and the people can`t pay back the money they`ve borrowed because they`re going broke. So the bank takes their farms and everybody thinks it`s the fault of Mitch`s father, a bank manager who writes reports on the families` situation. Right now, while Mitch is calling Doug, the twins Troy and Brent Malley are chasing him, tractor starter handles in their hands, because the bank`s going to chuck the Malleys off their land. It`s a chase through the whole small town and desperate Mitch doesn`t stop talking to his guardian angel and asking him for protection. He finally gets saved at an old shed where he sits on a rafter and tries to jump on the next when the Malleys spot him. But he doesn`t make it, he falls, still thinking of Doug - and he`s really lucky. He falls on some cardboard boxes, so he isn`t hurt at all. He`s happy: Doug has come back.
