If you can write a summary of a text, you show that you have understood the main points of the text quite well.
A summary is first of all, an objective(!) version of the original text.
It does not add anything new in the way of interpreting the text or giving a personal comment on it.

How to write a Summary

Step 1:Read the text slowly and carefully, if necessary more than once

Step 2:Then put the text aside and ask yourself what does the author want to say?
Answer this question in one sentence as to form a clear idea of the subject.

Step 3:Divide the text into adequate sections, the paragraphs will help you to find the main parts

Step 4:Now make a rough draft, listing the author´s major ideas in key words or phrases for each section

Step 5:Start your Summary with a heading and a sentence which inform the reader about the text you are summarizing (author, title, source, date+ topic of the text)

Step 6: Fill out your rough draft in your own words so as to achieve a readable, logical and coherent text

Useful Phrases for Summaries

The author...

starts out/ starts off with = beginnt mit
points out = weist darauf hin
deals with = beschäftigt sich mit...
stresses = betont
underlines = unterstreicht, stellt heraus
concentrates on = konzentriert sich auf...
continues with = fährt fort mit
weighs the pros and cons = wägt die vor und nachteile ab
gives examples = bringt Beispiele
tries to convince the reader= versucht den Leser zu überzeugen
concludes by saying that = schließt mit den Worten
draws the conclusion = zieht die Schlussfolgerung

Comment writing:

A. Preparation:

1.) Define the problem/subject
2. Gather and select arguments
3.)Group them according to their relevance and importance and
their logical connection

B. Writing the comment:

1.) Say what the problem/subject is.
2.) Introduce your opinion in a general evaluation of the problem.
3.) Prsent your arguments in detail.
Give reasons for your view. Two possible kinds of structure:

- one argument follows the other, the strongest
argument ist put forward at the end

- an argument for a view is immediately followed gy the argument against it.

4.) Draw a conclusion.

How to write a comment:

Step 1:

As we have seen in...
As we know from...
The author of... holds the view that...

Step 2:
In my opinion/view...
To my mind...
I think....
There is noc question that..
I cannot really believe that...
I would say....
As far as I can see....

Step 3:

The first point I would like to mention...
When we have a closer look at...
In contrast to....
On reason is that...
Another argument is...

Step 4:

Therefore I would say/ think / don´t think / cannot agree with /
As a result...
In short....
All in all....
To summarize....

- Hauptteil / main body
- Schluss / conclusio
