The inspector is a very racist and insulting middle-aged man. He discriminates against her all the time, because she is black. In his view all black women have a lot of children. This is just one of many prejudice he has about black people. He shows her that he doesn’t like her in a way, which is very unfair, because she has not the possibility to fight against it. For example he tries to make her homesick and sings “Swanee River”. As he recognizes that Marian is higher educated, he reacts with loud laughing because he does not believe her.

Ex. 4) Marian doesn’t fail the drivers test because of her ability to drive a car. The only reason for doesn’t get the license is the colour of her skin because she get a racist inspector.

Ex. 5) She tries to make understand the situation, which isn’t easy for black people. Most time they haven’t the possibility to fight against discrimantion. They don’t get the same chances like white people.
