The book deals with the relationship of a man called Will and a boy called Marcus. Will lives his life like a normal teenager altough he is an adult and Marcus, who is of course a teenager, doesn’t behave like it. His outer appearance is different from the others just like his behaviour what is up to the education from his mother Fiona who is depressive and lives her life like in the seventies.

The novel “About a Boy” by Nick Hornby was written in 1998. It deals with the friendship between Will, who is thirty-six and Marcus, who is twelve years old.

Will, a thirty-six-year old single, is constantly concerned with “being cool”. He lives in a flat in London with the latest video and stereo, the trendiest kitchen and the most modern household appliances. He wears the most fashionable clothes and spends his days going shopping, visiting the pub or driving around in his sports car.

He doesn’t have to work because he lives off the royalties from a Christmas song written by his father. Moreover, he knows how to score with women and prefers short-term relationships. When he learns that single mothers are easy to please, he joins SPAT, a club of single parents and invents Ned, his two-year-old son.

One day he meets Marcus, a twelve-year old outsider, who hasn’t got any friends at his age because of being different from the others. The only person Marcus is close to is his mother Fiona. He is brought up by her as a kid of the seventies. He listens to the wrong music, wears the wrong clothes and, actually, everything is wrong with him. He worries a lot about his mother because she’s endangered of suicide. Marcus behaves like he’s older than a twelve-year old boy, quite the opposite of Will who behaves like a teenager. First Will is not very amused by Marcus’ visits, but later he appreciates (anerkennen) his companionship.

In the course of time Marcus learns from Will and Will learns from Marcus.

I chose this extract because for the first time you can see that Marcus says to his mother what he thinks and what he wants. And the normal behaviour of Will is shown very well.

What I like about the film is that you can see how the lives of Will and Marcus changed when they spend much more time together.
When both will put themselves together they will be the person they like to be because Will gets to know that he misses what Marcus actually has and Marcus misses what Will has.
Will begins to like the life in a family and decides that it’s much better than a life as single. Marcus learns how to deal with his life and his behaviour and also that he has to be more self-confident to live his heard life.
