13 year-old Alejandro Zamora calls himself a  “Facebook freak“. A life without the social network seems to be unbelievable (unthinkable/not feasible) for the eighth grader. In most of his spare time he chats with his friends or just hangs around the social media platform. His mother,
Olivia M. said that she liked the idea of Alejandro using his computer. However, she did not have much luck of getting him to use it for homework. S he herself has no clue about social networks and his online activities. This phenomenon is not an exception in an American households. As access to devices has spread in order to reduce the digital divide, children and teenagers spend between 10 and 11.5 hours per day on social media. Unfortunately the majority of the American population do not know how to use their technical devices in a practical way. (What practical way ?) That’s because there is a lack of digital literacy in America. But what is digital literacy? Digital literacy is the ability to handle media responsibly and to use it and its contents according to one’s own needs and purposes. The government has recognised that it is not sufficient to just enable everyone to have access to computing tools because they are mostly used for pure entertainment, instead of education. To show the proper use of media the Federal Communications Commission wants to teach digital literacy by creating a digital literacy corps, which is an informal national movement of student volunteers, the so-called digital literacy trainers. They go to schools and libraries to teach the productive uses of computers and computer skills. Digital literacy improves employability because it is demanded by many employers when they first evaluate a job application. Therefor e it’s essential to learn the basic use of computers from basic keyboard use to word-processing like Microsoft Word,  Office or P ages, for example, because you need it in almost every situation like for school or at work. It is also very important to have knowledge of other advantages of the use of computer s besides the entertainment factor. Students have to be able to do research on the Internet for homework or presentations. They should have the ability to distinguish the relevancy between  important and unnecessary information. Adults should be introduced in contact with media as well like for presentations in jobs or for job seeking (?Macht keinen Sinn) . Furthermore , the Internet can be an advantageous to parents too.In case they are in need of advice they can get some on different web forums. Not only for personal advantages, parents have to be taught in digital literacy but also for the protection and education of their children. They need to know how to use filters to block dangerous platforms such as online pornography or other disturbing sites. To prevent the excessive time-wasting usage of the computer for entertainment they can learn to limit the access. Sometimes it may be impractical for a parent to sit and watch a child for hours while they do their homework, or parents may still be at work when their kids get home from school. Some kids are just a bit mischievous and sneak onto the computer late at night to play games or chat with their friends. So there are certain softwares that can help parents control their children’s utilisation of the Internet. These softwares control the amount of time on computers,the Internet or games, as well as what users are allowed to do. Most programs limit how long a user can use the computer and when. For example, you could allow two hours per day of computer time but block out the hours that you are at work, and 11pm to 6am, so that the child does not use the computer during unreasonable or unsupervised hours.
