Introduction
Greenpeace is an independent and impartial environmental organization founded in Vancouver, Canada in 1971 to oppose the United States testing nuclear devices in Alaska. Independent means that Greenpeace don’t get any money from groups, parties or the state. The focus of the organization is environmental issues. Greenpeace is known for its campaigns against whaling, bottom trawling, global warming, ancient forest destruction, nuclear power and genetic engineering.
All these campaigns are nonviolent direct actions and are arranged to put focus on ecological grievances. By public pressure Greenpeace tries to start off and achieve changes.
The organization doesn’t only talk about environmental scandals. It also develops solutions to correct the causes of environmental pollution.
The name “Greenpeace” literally translated means “grüner Frieden” The developed during a peace demonstration against nuclear tests. The founders of Greenpeace Irvin Stowe, Jim Bohlen and Paul Cote wanted to prevent US-nuclear tests. And so they had the idea to fight for peace. But they said “LetŽs make it a green peace”. So the name “Greenpeace” came to life.
The name also stands for the following attitudes: not to touch nature, not to attack or destroy nature but to protect a nature and keep it green. The first part of the name also means everything that is green and hope.

The Structure of the organization:
Greenpeace was founded in 1971. Till 1980 the organization wasnŽt that well-known in Germany. But since the foundation of a Greenpeace national office in Hamburg and later, 1.January 1991, in Berlin a lot of people got to know Greenpeace. There arenŽt only these two national offices of Greenpeace in Germany. There are also 90 regional offices of Greenpeace with about 2400 active voluntary members. There also is such an regional office of Greenpeace here in Mannheim, which I visited to get more information. These offices arrange a lot of local work. They do much campaign work, give talks, plan and organize events to keep the public informed. During their talks they give a lot of facts, so that they canŽt be ignored and get supported. They also work with the press and the media.
Thanks to the many members and their enthusiasm has been able to achieve many spectacular successes. GREENPEACE LEBT VOM MITMACHEN?
The members donŽt earn any money.
Due to their brilliant action against the dumping of toxic oil into the North Sea the environmental organization was known everywhere in the BRD, too.
The worldwide number of members was rising quickly. In 1985 there were 80.000, in 1986 277.000 members. Today there are about 560.000 members.
And whatŽs more: since 2005 Greenpeace has got national agencies in about 40 states; for example in France, Italy, Greece, Norway, Russia, China, Newzeeland,….
There are different kinds of groups you can join. For example a group called “Team50plus”, in which human beings over 50 can get involved to help.
The groups for kids and Teens are called “Ekobroom, Greenies, or Turbo kids”. In these groups kids between 10 and 15 years meet to fight on environmental problems in their neighborhood. So kids also learn to feel responsible and take care for the environment.
