Referat über Woodstock und Hippie

Alles zu Hippies- hippie movement began as a youth movement in the United States during the middle 1960s
- mostly teenagers between the ages of 15 and 25 years
- comes from the word "hipster" (Hüfthose)
- created their own communities, listened to rock music, folk, blues and psychedelic rock, and some used drugs, were against nuclear weapons and the Vietnam War, for sexual liberation, were often vegetarien
- wanted peace, love and personal freedom > expressed in the Beatles song "All you need is love"

- art and fashion: both men and women wore jeans and long hair, wore sandals or went barefoot
- men often wore beards, while women wore little or no makeup, many women went braless
- they often chose brightly coloured clothes and wore unusal styles, such as vests, peasant blouses, and long, full skirts
- many of these clothes were self-made or bouhgt from flea markets and second-hand shops.
- Favored accessoires for both men and women included Native American jewellery, head scarves, headbands and long beaded necklaces

- love and sex: free love > people critiziced they had wild sex orgies, seduced innocent teenagers and every manner of sexual perversion
- a popular hippie slogan: "If it feels good, do it! " That meant you were free to love who you want to love, whenever you want to, however you want to. No taboos. Love was no longer limited to one person, you could love anyone you choose.

- Drugs: many hippies used cannabis, LSD (the hippie sacrament)
- "Expand your consciousness and find ecstasy and revelation within" > Harvard University professor Timothy Leary
- harder drugs were also used
- many people died because of drugs, also famous musicians like Janis Joplin

- Hippies travelled a lot.
- Planning wasn't important for hippies, they were happy to put a few clothes in a backpack, stick out their thumbs and hitchhike anywhere.
- During the summers, entire families travelled together in their trucks and buses.

- (the Peace symbol was developed in the UK as a logo for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, and was embraced by U.S. Anti-war protestors during the 1960s.)
- Hippies often participated in non-violent political demonstrations, such as civil rights marches
- demonstrated a lot against the war in Vietnam

- 0n january 14, 1967 started "Summer of Love"
- Scott McKenzie's "San Francisco" became a hit, the lyrics: " If you're going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair"
- 100.000 young people from all over the world traveled to San Francisco in the summer of 1967, wearing flowers in their hair

- films about hippie culture were made
- Also the popular broadway musical "Hair" was presented in 1967

- in August 1969 the "Woodstock-Festival" took place in Bethel /New York, most famous festival in the 60s ,
- 3 days of peace and music (15 to 18 August 1969), over 500,000 people arrived
- rainy weekend, thirty-two acts performed outdoors
- famous musicians: Richie Havens Joan Baez, Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead, Carlos Santana, The Who, Jefferson Airplane and Jimi Hendrix, Joe Cocker and Crosby, Stills, Nash &Young
- it rained a lot so the hippies danced in the rain and in the mud, mud slider
- the festival focused on peace, love and a balanced lifestyle
- it was a peaceful festival but there were two fatalities: one from a heroin overdose and another died in an accident when a tractor ran over an attendee sleeping in a field.
- There also were two births at the event and four miscarriages
- there were a lot of documentations about Woodstock, and also a film named " Taking Woodstock" which was produced in 2009 and was shown in the cinema

Jimi Hendrix: born on November 27, 1942 in Seattle Washington
- american guitarist/singer-songwriter,
- A hard childhood (was raped by a man, parents divorced when he was 9)
- greatest electric guitarist in music history/one of the most influential musicians of his era
- was influenced by blues artists, soul and jazz guitarists
- won many rock music awards in his lifetime
- on september 18, 1970 jimi hendrix died in London, he had taken nine sleeping pills. The normal medical dose was a half one. He had taken this with red wine, which filled his airways > had committed suicide
- got a star in the Hollywood walk of fame in 1994

- Janis Joplin: born on January 19, 1943 in Texas
- american singer/songwriter
- began singing as a teenager
- she was bullied in school, because she was overweight and her skin broke out so badly, she was left with deep scars
- sang about her experience at school, "The Queen of Rock and Roll", female version of Elvis presley
- used a lot of drugs and was a heavy drinker
- often she got away from these things but she always continued with it after a short time
- On october 4th, 1970 she was found on the floor beside her bed. Dead. The cause of death was an overdose of heroin and alcohol.
- short career of only four years
- 16 days after Jimi Hendrix's death

- Joe Cocker: born on 20 May, 1944 in Sheffield, England
- english rock and blues singer
- is most known for his gritty voice, his strange arm movements while performing, and his cover versions of popular songs
- first experience in singing was at age 12
- was on tour in the US, Europe (often in Germany), Australia
- after a departure of a friend he sank into a depression and began using heroin. In June 1973 he stopped it, but continued to drink heavily
- got several awards, including a Grammy Award in 1983
- in February 1989 he performed for President George H.W Bush
- is recording a new album, which probably will be released in 2012
